Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Instructor - Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) for Adult Mental Health will be responsible to educate & coach team members to promote the development & sustainability of clinical best practices, achieve comprehensive care plans, assist in implementation of evidence-based practice and critically assess, evaluate, anticipate and address risks to patients & staff safety. The CNE will communicate and model Recovery Alberta values, foster inter-professional teamwork, patient-centered care, and innovation. The CNE will possess advanced skill, knowledge, and experience in mental health nursing with an ability to educate and mentor staff. Strong understanding of professional standards of practice and knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health continuum of care is crucial. The CNE will be expected to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team and be involved in program development and planning to deliver quality care to patients and families. The CNE is expected to have the ability to assist staff to reflect on their practice in an approachable manner with positive and effective feedback, making improvements toward best practice. The CNE is expected to be a leader in developing best practices and can assess and support the learning requirements for mental health nurses. The CNE will be responsible for delivering and maintaining an orientation program and advanced learning needs for the inpatient team. Through clinical leadership, mentoring, coaching and feedback for staff, the CNE supports high quality, safe patient care that promotes a positive patient experience. Must possess strong adaptability and organizational skills with the ability to plan/manage short- and long-term initiatives, plans, and projects. Demonstrated analytical, planning, teaching, conflict management and decision-making skills are critical.

Description:

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator in support of both nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary clinical team. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of three years recent (within the last 5 years) Acute Inpatient Mental Health Nursing experience required. Ability and experience creating and delivering presentation content/implement in services to a multi-disciplinary mental health team. Skill and experience teaching/presenting to adult learners. Knowledge and ability to act as a leader/support, understand when/how to step in and act as a resource. Ability to assess learning needs of staff to support practice and ongoing development on a multidisciplinary team. Skill/knowledge of adult learning principles. Experience and knowledge of addiction and mental health treatment modalities, evidence-based psychosocial interventions, including group therapy required. Formal education of multiple mental health modalities required. Ability to assist with complex care planning required. Expert knowledge of mental health diagnosis, psychosocial interventions, care plans, documentation, record management, HPA restricted activities, Mental Health Act, MSE, suicide risk assessment, current applicable policy and legislation required. Strong working knowledge/experience of inpatient aggression/de-escalation techniques. Ability to teach staff violence risk assessment and code white response. Ability to lead/support debrief following an aggressive incident required. Strong working knowledge of physical/system assessment. Ability to support staff in medical management of patients and code 66/ blue responses.

Preferred Qualifications:

5 years adult acute inpatient mental health experience with understanding of basic medical conditions & procedures. Experience with Quality Improvement Initiatives. Demonstrated leadership or clinical supervision. Experience in a leadership role in the advancement of nursing practice.
