The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) Addictions and Mental health Program is a group of dynamic multidisciplinary teams that work together to ensure our patients have the best standard of care and experience. Our site runs six Addictions and Mental Health Programs; Two General Psychiatry Inpatient Units, Day Hospital Program, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), Consultation Liaison, and the Short Stay Unit (SSU). As a frontline clinical leader, the Nurse Clinician (NC) is responsible for the overall operation of PES team within the ED. The NC is responsible for overseeing the admission, discharge, and transfer of patients in the ED. These responsibilities include assigning duties to nursing and support staff, ensuring that the receiving unit can support patients’ psychiatric and medical needs, and engaging in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders to provide quality care. The NC ensures that the unit is adequately staffed and liaises with scheduling to arrange coverage. The NC also engages in direct patient care, utilizing effective verbal de-escalation skills and medical skills. The NC is responsible for promoting a safe working environment, upholding WHS standards and inspections, and modelling Recovery Alberta values. The NC will work alongside the Clinical Nurse Educator/Instructor to support education and professional development for staff, including assisting with staff development, roll-out of new initiatives and the orientation of new staff. The NC will facilitate Alberta Mental Health Act (MHA) processes in the ED, coordinate ED care plan meetings with external stakeholders, and utilize systems level problem solving. Additionally, the NC is independent, self-directed, and goal-oriented, seeking opportunities to enhance the delivery of patient care through local quality improvement initiatives.

As a Nurse Clinician (NC), you will be responsible for the coordination of an interprofessional team, in the provision of quality patient (client, resident) care in order to meet the operational priorities and requirements within a clinical setting. You will use an integrative leadership approach in assisting, planning, implementing and evaluating care needs, while assuming responsibility for staff assignments, patient flow and clinical resources. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum 2 years of experience working continuously as a Charge Nurse in the PES enhanced model of care within the last 3 years. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and high intensity environment under pressure and handle competing priorities. Knowledge of Recovery Alberta and AHS Emergency Departments and Urgent Care Services Policies & Procedures. Ability to promote a positive work environment that facilitates the development of high performing teams. Excellent conflict resolution skills, including the ability to mediate conflict between multiple parties. Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Openness and adaptability to innovation and be a change advocate and agent. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the DSM V Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Calgary Zone AMH Inpatient Medical Capabilities Guidelines and AMH Bed flow policies and procedures by Recovery Alberta. Knowledge of Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone. Knowledge of Mental Health Act and Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques and current NVCI certification. Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral (DBT), and/or Motivational Interviewing (MI) Ability to lift, push, and pull less than 50lbs (ie stretcher's, restraints).
Preferred Qualifications:Master’s level degree in healthcare, nursing, or leadership. Prosci, Alberta Improvement Way, or other change-based certification & training Working knowledge Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint. Experience with Dragon Medical One Dictation an asset. Certification in CBT, DBT, and/or MI an asset.
