Make a difference in the lives of Albertans by joining the team in the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Services (SAFPC) as a Recreation Therapist I (RT-I). Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the RT-I works in alignment with the established protocols for the NCR-MD (Not Criminally Responsible Due to Mental Disorder) program at SAPFC and in the community. Our treatment team adheres to Recovery Alberta policies and recreation principles as outlined in the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association guidelines. This position is responsible for assessing patients’ recreation and leisure needs and/or work collaboratively with other staff in their assessment as they assist patients in the development and meeting of their personal goals for recreation and leisure. All recreation or leisure activities will be consistent with a psychosocial rehabilitation model of recovery, presented in a patient and family centered and trauma informed manner. This position is responsible for knowing and understanding the NCR-MD protocols and working within the inpatient team. The recreation therapist is responsible to provide and advocate for patient centered care. The recreation therapist will assist the client in the development of recreational goals and facilitation of activities within the facility and the greater Calgary area to achieve these goals. The recreation therapist provides leadership in this area and is accountable to develop, record, assign, monitor, and evaluate progress. Description:

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients' treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Two or more years working within an inpatient or community mental health setting. Knowledge of the Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder population and legislation. Excellent communication skills. Ability to complete comprehensive reports for the Criminal Code Review Board. Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI). Valid driver’s license and willingness to transport and support patients in the community. Ability to work alone and in a team environment. Knowledge of various community recreation opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledgeable regarding the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre (SAFPC) and the NCR-MD program. One-year (or practicum) in forensic mental health experience. Knowledge of various community resources. Knowledge of addiction and substance use issues.
