Your Opportunity:

The Stollery Emergency Department (ED) Mental Health (MH) Team is part of the Children, Youth, and Families, Addiction and Mental Health (CYF AMH) portfolio and is a specialty service within the Stollery ED. The Stollery ED MH Nurse reports to the Care Manager of Urgent Services in CYF AMH. The MH Nurse applies knowledge of developmental stages, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and enhanced communication skills to provide care and support to children, youth, and their families who present to the Stollery Emergency Department with mental health as their primary concern. The care provided by the ED MH Nurse must be concurrent-capable, family and patient-centred, trauma informed, and done in collaboration with the ED physician, Psychiatrist, and other care providers. As a member of the Stollery ED MH Team, the MH Nurse demonstrates advanced skills in mental health risk assessment, risk management, non-violent crisis intervention, therapeutic engagement, safety planning, and collaboration, and provides medical interventions as needed. Interventions and care must be evidenced based, trauma informed, and be provided from a strengths-based, recovery-oriented orientation. The MH Nurse requires in-depth knowledge of community resources and discharge planning for an effective and safe discharge from the ED. The MH Nurse works close with the Crisis Team, Urgent Clinic, other child and adolescent mental health care providers, and community partners such as Children’s Services, Family Supports to Children with Disabilities, Police, and School Personnel. This role requires knowledge of internal and external services and resources to engage in planning with families to best meet their needs.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 - $55.79 per hour. Upon being entered into the register as a Registered Nurse, the rate of pay will be adjusted in accordance with the UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must have a diploma or degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing - degree preferred. 3-5 years of recent experience in child and adolescent community/acute addiction and mental health. Excellent assessment and communications skills are required. Current BCLS-HCP certification and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference given for experience working in an Emergency or other high acuity area. Involvement in family teaching and knowledge of community programs related to Child & Adolescent Mental Health is preferred. Connect Care experience is preferred.
