The CCMHBI Adult Inpatient Program Acute Admission Units are expanding the program to include an Acute Psychiatry Assessment Team (APAT). The Acute Psychiatry Assessment Team will be a 24/7 service that is staffed by an Assistant Head Nurse and 6 additional Registered Psychiatric Nurses and Registered Nurses. As a nurse on the APAT, you will report to a Unit Manager or designate. You will work closely with CCMHBI Physicians and Central Service Managers. This position will be the primary contact for referring physicians and will, in turn, provide communication to the screening CCMHBI physician for all 3 Acute admission units. You will be responsible for preliminary assessments of walk-in patients and patients who have been conveyed by RCMP under the Mental Health Act. The nurse will compile and document information from various referral sources. You will provide a daily verbal report to CCMHBI Physicians highlighting all after-hour activity including patient movement, pending admissions and other relevant clinical information. The nurse will assist the Units' staff in completing the Nursing Admission Navigator. The nurse will respond to various incoming calls and provide communication in relation to patient care/admissions under the Mental Health Act. Extensive MHA knowledge is required to support and educate clients, families, agents, community physicians, etc. You will be a resource for after-hours code responses by having proficient medical nursing assessment skills and must be IV certified. Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Applicants must have at least 1 year of experience in an Acute Psychiatry setting and have a strong understanding of the Mental Health Act. Applicants must possess the ability to communicate with both excellent verbal and written communication skills. You must have experience and access to Connect Care. You must demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills with an outstanding patient-centered attitude. Applicants must have excellent organizational skills, a strong initiative and the ability to work independently as well as excellent nursing and mental health status assessment skills, crisis intervention and de-escalation skills. You must be physically and emotionally able to carry out the duties this position will require. A proven ability to work positively, effectively and co-operatively within a multi-disciplinary team will be needed.
