Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, the ECT Program Nurse assists in the coordination and safe delivery of electroconvulsive therapy to both inpatients and outpatients referred by the Adult Mental Health Program based at the RAH. Additionally, the RAH ECT Program provides electroconvulsive therapy to both the youth and geriatric patient population. The successful candidate will be expected to provide education and support to the various patient groups and their families, to welcome and engage patients and families/caregivers referred to the program, to effectively address and alleviate anxiety and apprehension in a variety of patient and family/care-giver populations. The ECT Program Nurse has a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. The ECT Program Nurse will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. The ECT Program Nurse will be expected to assist in the pre-treatment evaluation of all patients. In addition, the ECT program nurse must ensure ECT equipment (including treatment and emergency medications) are available in the treatment area, set up the treatment area, assist in the treatment area as per professional nursing standards, hospital and program policies and procedures and in accordance with all legal and ethical standards. The ECT program nurse is expected to provide emergency interventions as required and to be cross-trained/competent with the ECT Recovery Nurse responsibilities. The ECT Program Nurse is expected to have familiarity with psychiatric disorders that would require ECT. The ability to collaborate with patients, families, nurses, physicians and other health care professionals in the provision of care is essential. The ECT Program Nurse will be expected to generate data as appropriate and maintain statistics.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58 /hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with Recovery Alberta /UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Previous ECT experience is a requirement. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational and patient care skills. Competencies should include, direct IV push medication administration and IV initiation. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Must be able to identify own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficits occur. Flexibility, tolerance and an ability to deal with challenging situations is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in perioperative care/day surgery is preferred. Post-anesthesia Recovery room education/experience is preferred. Non-violent crisis intervention (NCI) training is preferred. Minimum of 2 years mental health nursing experience, in an acute care psychiatric setting is an asset. Familiarity with care options in the community a definite asset.
