Your Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) who is passionate about working and supporting children and youth within Child & Adolescent Mental Health at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The RN/RPN provides safe, ethical, and developmentally appropriate nursing care while integrating clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and therapeutic skills. This role contributes to the ongoing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for children and adolescents experiencing mental health concerns. We are seeking individuals with experience in child and adolescent mental health who demonstrate strong engagement and therapeutic rapport-skills. Comprehensive assessment abilities and effective participation in treatment planning. The incumbent will demonstrate professionalism, reliability, sound judgment and collaborative teamwork. As part of the multidisciplinary care team, the RN/RPN participates in programming and daily therapeutic activities, supporting patient and family-centered care. This role also contributes to initiatives that promote quality, safety, and best practice within the mental health setting. Consistent communication with patients, families, and team members is essential to ensuring safe and effective interventions. The role involves working closely with children and youth who may present with significant mental health or behavioral concerns, including emotional dysregulation, loud vocalizations, anger, anxiety, and other acute response-based activities, and assist in escorting or restraining children, when necessary, in accordance with policy.

Description:

As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), you will provide leadership through a wide variety of nursing services to patients (clients, residents) for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, mental health and preventing mental illness, injury and disability. You will teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent experience working in a child/adolescent mental health care setting for a minimum of one year experience is essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication, behavioral management, deescalation, and assessment skills as well as solid organizational and critical thinking abilities. Knowledge of treatments and medications used with children and youth experiencing complex psychiatric illness is required. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role. Candidates must be physically able to lift up to 11 kg, sit for extended periods while completing computer-based documentation, and communicate effectively with caregivers and external partners.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred; however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice will be considered. Experience working within a multidisciplinary team is an asset. Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention or Effective De-escalation Techniques training is preferred.
